Chuns Reef Beachfront Paradise

Chuns Reef Beach Estate sits on a lot of 17,000 sq ft, with 180 feet of ocean frontage. This vacation rental is located three miles from Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay and Haleiwa town, on the famous North Shore surf spot and snorkeling beach at Chuns Reef. Three private units are available to rent separately, or rent the entire estate. Each unit comes with it's own BBQ and there are two laundry areas. Beach and bath towels are provided. The only shared areas are the driveway, Jacuzzi and beachside covered picnic area.

The home was originally constructed as the Laniakea Train Station in the late 1800s. Because of it's history, it is built much closer to the ocean than current regulations allow - closer than most oceanfront homes on Oahu. It's unique position as a point home on the edge of Chun's Reef Beach means there are neighbors on only one side. We have raised the home above the winter surf, on large cement pillars. It's location and elevation give it an unparalleled view of the beach, ocean, turtles, and sunset; and allow easy beach access. The hills behind our holiday rental are undeveloped lending the neighborhood an open rural atmosphere.

Like most of the homes in the area, ours is built next to the Kamehameha Highway, a two lane country road which offers the only access to the North Shore's famous beaches. In general, traffic moves at a relaxed pace, but it can slow down dramatically with surf competitions or winter swells. The whole island tilts to the North Shore! Even the local people come to see the big waves!

Surfing in the area is world class. Chuns Reef is directly in front of the house, with seven famous surf breaks nearby, suiting beginners to experienced riders.

When the surf is small, snorkeling is excellent on the reefs near our holiday home. There is a great diversity of marine life and tropical fish species. And then there are the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, who have chosen to pick just our reef for 30 years on Oahu. They crawl up on the sand to bathe in the sun; sometimes you'll see ten or twenty in a day. (Lately, the tour buses have picked up on our beach as being a hot spot; on weekends we sometimes have more traffic to see the sea turtles.)

Outdoor equipment is provided for the enjoyment of all our guests, at no charge. You'll save hundreds of dollars on rental equipment. At time of writing, this includes:

  • 12 foot soft top surf boards & regular surf boards
  • boogie boards, masks, fins and snorkels
  • beach toys & coolers
  • rolling & plastic beach chairs

The interior of the vacation home was remodeled in 2006, and features many antiques from around the world. All units have wireless internet or plug in for your computer, with full cable broadband bandwidth. All units feature digital TV with HBO and showtime on demand, thirty music stations, TV Pizza Hut deliveries, and pay-per-view movies. Breakfast, lunch or dinner can be ordered from renowned local growers and chefs such as Cab Spates.

Some facilities are shared:
  • Sunset has it's own washer and dryer. Cottage and Bamboo share a washer and dryer.
  • There is secure parking for one car for each unit in the driveway.
  • The Jacuzzi and outdoor equipment lanai are shared between the units.
  • All units have their own private living areas.

All linens are provided, including beach & bath towels.

There is a bus stop in front of the holiday home. There is a very old thick rock wall surrounding the property, with mature foliage, adding a measure of privacy and shielding the property from road noise. The property has monitored security cameras and a motion light system. There is a private gated walkway with four steps to the white sand beach.

Although bugs are common in Hawaii, as in all tropical areas, we take great care to keep our units immaculately clean, and maintain screens and seals on doors and windows. The yard and outside of home is professionally treated for bugs quarterly. The home was tented for termites in 2006.

The upstairs of the home was the main building for the train station. It has a large living area and generous kitchen, single private bathroom, master bedroom and open den with additional double bed. There is a wrap around lanai with outdoor dining area. The kitchen, living area and lanai enjoy expansive views of the ocean and the beach.

This unit has a new Sony 60inch LED TV, with Apple TV. The kitchen has a full size refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave oven.

The upstairs master bedroom has two windows facing the road, and air conditioning so you can shut the windows if you like. The master is closer to the road than the other rooms, but wood shakes outside and insulated interior wood walls ensure it is a quiet place to sleep. In the winter, the waves are so loud that occupants only feel the vibrations and hear the ocean. Even in the summer, with the trade winds and light waves, the ocean sound still fills the home.

Cool sea breezes are complemented by ceiling and floor fans throughout the home.

Deck furniture and sleeper lounge are brand new as of June 2009.

The oceanfront bamboo ocean studio is cut into the side of the hill, under the house. It is surrounded on three sides by rocks, and very private. On the northern side, glass sliding doors offer an expansive ocean view, and open onto a large covered patio (lanai), just steps from the beach.

The studio was remodeled in April 2006, and features a granite kitchen counter top, bamboo walls, a cedar ceiling and 500 sq ft of parquet wood flooring. In the living area there is a queen bed and double futon couch bed and a large TV. The kitchenette has convection and microwave ovens, a mini refrigerator, blender and coffee maker. The private bathroom has a stand up shower.

With the ceiling fans on, and sliding doors open, the cool breeze circulates inside. Sounds of the ocean fill the studio, even during the calm summer months.

The covered lanai is roughly 300sq ft, with an additional 250sq ft of uncovered patio area. There is a hammock and gas BBQ on the lanai, a coffee table, small dining table and chairs. Nearby, a private gated walkway leads to the beach. The hot water yard shower is great for a quick rinse off after swimming.  In Dec and Jan the waves increase and we move Lanai furniture to Bamboo side yard patio and may put storm board over the front sliding glass doors for a day or two if necessary.

This unit has undergone a major upgrade as of June 2009, including lots of new furniture and gorgeous bamboo trim.

The garden pond cottage began it's existence as the smoke house for the Laniakea train station. Pineapple and sugarcane workers set the train station alight while cooking their BBQ lunch, around the turn of the century. They decided that it was better to make fire in a separate structure! Today this is a detached cottage next to the rock wall and highway. It still has the original BBQ in the closet, and the original train station bathroom.

The cottage has an ocean view and is across the driveway from the white sand beach. It is very clean and well maintained. The cottage comes with a private covered patio and additional large beachside cabana for barbeques and dining. It was remodeled in May of 2006 and is very clean and well maintained.

The cottage has a small bedroom and kitchen, and a private bathroom with bathtub. Bedroom and kitchen are attached; the private bathroom is an eight foot walk down a covered pathway. The unit has fan and air conditioner. Two sets of sliding glass doors and main door allow cross ventilation by trade winds.

The cottage has a bench and table in the living/kitchen room. Attached is a private covered patio with a barbeque area and fish pond / waterfall, a small dining table and two chairs. In addition there is a private covered small patio on the beach for the studio.

The bathroom walkway has security and motion detectors lights on the walk all the way to and from the cottage. The walkway has indirect lighting on from 6 to 10PM. In 30 years we have not had a problem. And we have even had handicapped. We do provide a bathrobe.

The bedroom has a queen bed and large TV. The kitchen has a microwave, toaster oven, blender, coffeemaker, small hotel refrigerator etc. The private bathroom has a shower and bath.

The first patio is on the mountain side of the property, and has a fish pond and small waterfall. The area has lots of plants, and is nestled behind the rock wall. There is a small dining table here, and it's a beautiful place for lunch in the shade. You can hear the road from this area, though.

The second patio area is on the east side of the property, right next to the beach. It's great for a romantic dinner or an oceanfront breakfast. Although, if the winter waves are high, you might get salt spray in your coffee!
